For a city to be able to host the Super Bowl, it must meet numerous specific requirements to be an eligible candidate.
Climate:
A warmer climate is the most desirable factor when choosing a host city as the NFL wants the game to be enjoyed at a comfortable temperature for both the players and fans.
Accommodations:
The stadium that the Super Bowl is played in must have a seat capacity of at least 70,000. Tens of thousands of fans travel every year to experience the Super Bowl in person, and a stadium must be able to accommodate all of the fans. If needed, a stadium can decide to set up temporary seating in the stadium to seat more fans.
Also due to the influx of fans to the host city as well as the media, the teams and their staff, at least 25,000 hotel rooms must be available within an hour’s distance from the stadium to house everyone.
The host city also needs a variety of different venues within a close distance from the stadium. These venues will provide space for pre-game events, a practice facility for both teams, and recreational activities such as golf courses and bowling alleys for players and their staff to use during their down time!
One more thing that is required of the host stadium to provide is the replacement of the grass before the game so the field is fresh and pristine for the players to play on.
Infrastructure:
Not everyone who travels to the host city for the Super Bowl has tickets for the game, which means they are there for the pre-game festivities and to tailgate! There must be at least 35,000 parking spaces within a mile of stadium to accommodate cars and all the pre-game fun.
In addition to that, a city must have reliable public transportation for fans to commute easily to and from the stadium.
Being in the construction industry, ERC knows that it takes a lot of effort to create the perfect space for any event. The Super Bowl is a prime example of needing that perfect space. While some factors are out of a city’s control like the weather, a city can prepare to host the Super Bowl by constructing hotels or living spaces, renovating stadiums, and paving bigger parking lots.
At ERC, we work with an extensive network of skilled subcontractors and suppliers to create the perfect space for our clients. If Houston were to ever host the Super Bowl again, the ERC team would be honored to help the City of Houston make any necessary preparations for this big day!
